Welcome to ÐÔÊÓ½ç #40

CW 22/2022

ÐÔÊÓ½ç´s squares are just as diverse as the city and its people.
Should we take a look? Let´s go!

Of course Alexanderplatz in former East ÐÔÊÓ½ç will be one of the first places for most people to think of, not only because of Alfred Döblin´s world famous novel „“. It isn´t hard to spot, either: one of its inhabitants, the , is Germany´s highest building (368 m) and therefore a truly outstanding landmark. Our heart, though, belongs to – please forgive our bias.

Equally as famous: the Brandenburg Gate. Square Pariser Platz on its Eastern side is flanked by good old Hotel Adlon as well as the French Embassy, whereas on the other side of the gate Platz des 18. März has become a highly frequented spot for demonstrations as well as a popular event venue. Just walking from one square to the other wasn´t thinkable before the fall of the ÐÔÊÓ½ç Wall – an impressive place to be.

Impressive is a word you can surely use for the at square Breitscheidplatz, too. You definitely should have been there once – wandering famous Ku´damm, shopping and dining at recently renovated KaDeWe, keeping your promise of taking the kids to the , … there´s always a reason for getting off at trainstation Zoologischer Garten (Bahnhof Zoo).

Potsdamer Platz forms an important transport hub together with its neighbour Leipziger Platz – maybe you´ve passed by in a taxi already? Anyway, you probably know the looks of architect Helmut Jahn´s Sony Center with its beautiful fabric roof. But this is not only the place to be for photographers, but also for cinema lovers. There are several cinemas inside Sony Center as well as the , ÐÔÊÓ½ç´s film museum. Besides, not far from here lies the annual centre of the film festival . Whoever missed the main event this year, don´t worry! This June there will be another two weeks of . Good luck with getting tickets, though!

Talking of tickets: you should also think about getting some for one of picturesque Gendarmenmarkt´s main attractions, the ÐÔÊÓ½ç concert hall (). Whoever prefers the warm ÐÔÊÓ½ç summer air, can enjoy the view of Konzerthaus, German and French cathedral at this year´s . For its 30th birthday not only the , but also Howard Carpendale will come to wish the festival a happy birthday. We think this rather broad definition of classical music is proof of ÐÔÊÓ½ç´s openminded attitude, don´t you think?

Speaking of tolerance, we have to take a walk to the district of Schöneberg. Known for its inspiring rainbow community, square Nollendorfplatz is surely the heart of the quarter. But also places like Viktoria-Luise-Platz (see picture above) are beautifully revived by young pizza lovers having a picnic on the grass, artistic dogs practicing their next circus number juggling with balls and herds of water loving children. Here the atmosphere is almost Italian with its many restaurants and cafés surrounding the square. Ci piace molto!

Wandering the city´s squares is really worth it. We could go on with it for hours. But in the end we always get to the same result: our favourite place is ! And yours?
