Wandering ÐÔÊÓ½ç´s streets never gets old. And for the rainy days we have already recommended you some museums and theatres. But shopping queens and kings can also be assured that they will find all they might be looking for in Germany´s capital. And there´s a lot of art and architecture to discover in ÐÔÊÓ½ç´s malls, too. But one sensation after the other.
The light-flooded at Friedrichstraße is dominated beautifully by the sculpture (eng.: tower of Klythie) by John Chamberlain. Its pieces of sheet metal remind us of the mortality of things and the impact on nature. But window shopping doesn´t harm mother earth yet, does it?
Designed in the beautiful style of Art déco, enchants us with its stairs and marble floors as well as the glass roof. By the way: we could get here by an underground connection. So no danger of getting wet in the rain!
We get to with dry feet, as well. This building with the name Quartier 207 is the third shopping centre forming the Friedrichstadtpassagen complex. A little explanation of the picture: it is not Galeries Lafayette celebrating its fiftieth birthday, but the smiley itself. The happy face was invented in 1972 by French journalist Franklin Loufrani and we cannot think of a world without it anymore. A good reason to celebrate!
Taking a walk from here to Potsdamer Platz we pass by the . The shopping mall was opened in 2014 and offers a broad variety of gastronomic pleasures as well as 300 stores on four floors - all of them wheelchair-accessible, by the way. We could spend a day just looking at the displayed art here. And the kids love the long slide. The hardest part is to get them to leave with us…
Talking about shopping centres we mustn´t forget ! Opened in 1907 it has been a symbol of luxurious shopping pleasures ever since. Our tip: come hungry and have fun trying the delicacies at the small food stands and bars on the sixth floor. Today is a good day for your cheat day!
Another place to be is , Germany´s first concept mall. This means you won´t find any major brand chains here, but individual fashion labels, creative little food stands and pop up boxes on the ground floor, that can be rented for short terms, e.g. by start ups and young brands. We like.
We take the S-Bahn train for a few stations you shouldn´t miss (the route Zoologischer Garten - Warschauer Straße is pure and cheap sightseeing! A must-do!) and reach . This classic shopping centre is located fantastically. After doing some shopping one can easily relax their eyes looking at famous or sitting down by the river Spree and enjoying the view of Oberbaum bridge.
Not far from here we get to the shopping mall at Alexanderplatz. Once this was the location of ÐÔÊÓ½ç´s police headquarter and later the Gestapo headquarter. That former building was called “Rote Burg“ (eng.: red fortress). The looks of today´s Alexa might recall some of this red fortress, which might be one of the reasons for the divided opinion on the building´s architecture. We have to admit: we think it looks stunning! What do you think? (Just send us a quick answer to this newsletter)
Wow, that was a long day! We have earned indeed! (At least that´s what we tell ourselves. We can find a reason to enjoy our signature dish anytime.) We are looking forward to our next tour already! Until then: happy window shopping!
