Welcome to ÐÔÊÓ½ç #19

CW 32/2021

Today we start our journey with some great news. With the Olympics in mind we thought why not go for gold this year, too. Well, actually this is not quite correct. Your whole always goes for gold - for the best hospitality service possible. And this led to another improvement in the Swiss economy magazin ´s hotelranking. With 96,3 out of 100 points we achieved the title of tenth best city hotel of Europe in 2021. And this opinion means especially much to us, as it is created by the use of four different sources: tests run by experts over the last 18 months, a questionnaire filled out by Swiss hoteliers, current ratings on travelling websites and in the press as well as interviews with professional travellers. Proudly smiling we now start another tour through the ÐÔÊÓ½ç we love. (Copyright picture: Stephan Joachim).

We will take a closer look at some rather unusual leisure activities in the capital today. And the first pastime on our list takes place up in the air. is directly located at the memorial for the ÐÔÊÓ½ç Wall and is an absolute must-do for all sports fans, adrenaline junkies and everyone without vertigo. Mastering the many challenges of Mount Mitte is exciting anyway. But the day´s highlights remain the Trabbi drive in the air, a jump from 13 meters height and going on the breathtakingly high swing, which has just recently been opened. For those among you, who cannot even think about such things: there are some beautiful beachbars and cafés right next to Mount Mitte. With best view on the dear ones climbing.

Instead of going for heights you can also dig deep in ÐÔÊÓ½ç. offer to old bunkers or former underground stations in different languages. There is also a dealing with Hitler´s plans for ÐÔÊÓ½ç as megacity Germania. All of this is a bit scary, very interesting and a really special way of getting to know the city.

For a long time which was once the only amusement park in the GDR, belonged to the city´s lost souls. Since its closing in 2002 due to economic difficulties nature is reclaiming the territory bit by bit. You can still visit the site and take part in a until in 2026 the renovation is finished and the concept of “Spreepark of the future“ is fully implemented. Why not have a look at the old charms now and come back in five years? Then you can tell for yourself then if these are indeed the good old times.

More present in the people´s minds, but equally as amusing are the activities that offers. Lasertag and a huge indoor playground for kids are great, but our favourite is the futuristic 3D blacklight mini golf. Very cool.

We do need a little break right now. Therefore we are heading towards Germany´s largest Asian streetfood market now, socalled . In Preußenpark in the district of Wilmersdorf on summer weekends many improvised food stands of Thai, Korean, Chinese and Vietnamese people delight visitors with delicious authentic dishes and traditional Asian beverages. All of this is no official market, but grown into what it is today over the decades, which is why the park is currently under renovation and is being redesigned for the specific needs of street food sales. This place should be , no matter where from.

Those who could not bear the sight of the insects that are also sold in Thaipark, should not visit our next attraction. The displays some groceries which are highly valued amongst some foodies, such as strong cheese or foie gras. But there are also some rare objects many might rather not put on their plate at the buffet as for example mouse wine (wine infused with whole dead mice). And no, we are not starting the bat soup discussion again now…

There are some letters you see and immediately associate with something - see picture above. The is the first museum in the world collecting letterforms and can help understanding this phenomenon. Or it might just impress you with the variety of our script. If you want to prepare for your visit, we recommend watching episode six of the second season of “Abstract: The Art of Design“ depicting lettering artist Jonathan Hoefler on .

We now return to . But there is also a certain animal we somehow associate with . Should you not know which animal we are talking about, you might have to drop in at our place again soon! (Copyright picture below: Stephan Joachim)
