Isn´t it beautiful these days? Summer is giving its best. Sometimes we could just relax on the balcony for days… if it wasn´t the inner motor demanding attention and action. And in ÐÔÊÓ½ç there are more than enough sporty options for active kids, usually lazy grown-ups and professional athletes. Let´s wake up our olympic soul today!
Surely the most common way to stay active in the city is the . The last years have been used busily for improvements of bike paths in terms of length and security. Besides, a lack of personal fitness or heavy baggage is no longer an obstacle for the green mode of transport thanks to e-bikes and cargo bikes.
Those who focus more on the fun of sports can put their energy into beach volleyball – right at square Alexanderplatz, with view of TV tower, Red Town Hall and church Marienkirche. And this is just one of many beach volley fields in the city.
Talking about the beach, it´s easy to think of water next – climate change´s rising temperatures make it even more tempting. Of course the many lakes in ÐÔÊÓ½ç and the surrounding countryside invite us to go for a swim or rent an SUP board – but surfing is way cooler! Since 2019 the indoor surfing facility in Lichtenberg offers the opportunity to try out or train the popular activity. Having our fun as amateurs should not let us forget how many professional teams are based in the German capital. If you talk about those, it sounds more like a zoo, though: Eisbären (ice bears) for ice hockey, Füchse (foxes) for handball, Alba ÐÔÊÓ½ç (with the famous albatros in their logo) for basketball. For all the football fans among you the 06 August is probably already marked in your calendars: at , both of the city´s football clubs, 1. FC Union ÐÔÊÓ½ç and Hertha BSC, meet for a nerve-wrecking city derby. All of those who are not that much into the popular sport will be happy about the free space at the lake.
When professional athletes and hobby runners meet in late summer and paralyse half of the city, it´s time for worldfamous again. The more than 45,000 starting places for 25 September this year are already sold out – it´s amazing, how many people seem to be capable of making the 42.195 kilometres, by foot, on a racing wheelchair or by handbike. Those who also feel comfortable rolling, can still sign up for the the day before. We will be your cheerleaders. Even if you don´t win one of the races like Ethiopian Gotytom Gebreslase last year (© Photo: SCC Events / Sebastian Wells).
