Welcome to ÐÔÊÓ½ç #33

CW 08/2022

Well, ladies, this is our day! At least when it comes to carnival traditions from Rhineland. Today´s Weiberfastnacht (eng.: women´s carnival) marks the beginning of the fifth season, as we call it. As a symbol of male power, there´s a costum that allows women to cut off men´s ties today - but as this goes back to an old-fashioned overcome role image of men and women from the 1950s, we are going to skip this one. And unlike carnival fans in Cologne, people from ÐÔÊÓ½ç don´t act very differently than they usually do. Comedian Felix Lobrecht compared this mentality to another German event:

„I noticed that a main difference between ÐÔÊÓ½ç and Munich is that if thousands of people in ÐÔÊÓ½ç dressed up absolutely ridiculously throw up on themselves, we don´t call it Octoberfest, but Tuesday.“

Welcome back to ÐÔÊÓ½ç!

Because carnival is not such a big thing in the capital, we now turn to a theme, that does move us these days: light.

January was depressingly dark. And we did not only feel that way: according to Statista, a major scientific research institute, the 35 hours of sun we had this first month of the year were indeed a lot less than the longtime average of the years before.

Darkness is also an issue for . This extraordinary exhibition in an old factory building in ÐÔÊÓ½ç Lichtenberg connects dynamic light installations with sound and interactive elements. Absolutely unique and the perfect distraction from the unwanted darkness outside. (© photos: Dark Matter ÐÔÊÓ½ç)

Light however is the main theme of . This cross-disciplinary platform gives a stage to the visual arts as well as technology and science. This combination was also British artist and quantum physicist Dr. Libby Heaney´s choice for her current exhibition “-“. With an interpretation of Hieronymus Bosch´s “Garden of earthly delights“ her 360° installation combines quantum computing with the depiction of her own aquarells. (© photo: Libby Heaney)

Those of you, who prefer to encounter the joy of light a bit more down to earth, might find a liking in one of the countless lamp stores of the city. Not even 50 metres away from one might get week at the sight of the Ballhaus colllection of (Dresdener Straße 20). Besides we recommend a shop-stop at nearby the Marheineke Markthalle (this indoor market is a perfect spot for a snack) or in the district of Schöneberg. (© photo: Loupiotte)

Light plays an important role for , too. Enough light to read in your , little enough at the for a warm, relaxed atmosphere. But why are we telling you this? You certainly know it all yourself. Before we drown in self-praise, we leave it to you to enjoy our light setting.

See you soon!
